NCHPC Endorses Robust Support for Palliative Care Research

The National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care has joined leading healthcare and advocacy organizations including the Patient Quality of Life Coalition in urging policymakers to prioritize robust funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and palliative care research in fiscal year 2025. Without sustained investment, the progress made in palliative care science could be jeopardized, limiting innovation and access to high-quality care.

The NCHPC strongly supports the prioritization of research funding for palliative care and has a long-standing commitment to advancing evidence-based approaches that improve the quality of life for individuals facing serious illnesses. We echo the concerns raised by the PQLC regarding the recent attempts by the administration to drastically alter funding policies, withholding grants and reducing indirect payments contrary to Congressional intent. While courts have paused implementation of many of the proposed policy changes, if implemented these policies would have a negative impact on palliative care research.

Research plays a vital role in shaping the future of palliative care, helping clinicians and healthcare organizations provide compassionate, effective, and patient-centered care. Thanks to National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research, we have seen groundbreaking advancements in symptom management, care coordination, and access to palliative services—particularly in underserved areas. These studies have demonstrated the profound impact of palliative care on reducing suffering, improving survival rates, and enhancing the well-being of patients and their families.

By championing evidence-based research, we ensure that every individual facing serious illness receives care that aligns with their needs, values, and goals. The future of palliative care depends on continued scientific discovery, policy support, and a commitment to research-driven excellence.
